Homemade Baby Food: Nuk Freshfoods™ Cook-n-Blend

Baby food can get pretty expensive. I am not a fan of preservatives and other additives, so I was very excited to have the chance to review the Nuk Freshfoods™ Cook-n-Blend Baby Food Maker. Now i’ll easily be able to make my new little guy wholesome, fresh food with only the ingredients I want him to eat.

Nuk Freshfoods Cook-n-Blend

Nuk’s Freshfoods™ Cook-n-Blend is an all in one baby food station that steams food and blends it into a puree in a few simple steps. You can create your own pureed food mixes, or choose a recipe. The Cook and Blend comes with a recipe booklet, or you can take a look at the recipes online here: Freshfoods™ My First Recipes Booklet. I chose Apple, Apricot, Peach for our first attempt. It’s so easy to make fresh, healthy food for your baby with the Nuk Cook-n-Blend. Here’s how it works:

Just gather your ingredients and chop them according to the recipe’s instructions.

Remove the cooking bowl and lid and put the ingredients in the steam basket. Then place the steam basket inside the bowl, replace the lid, and snap the bowl back onto the base.

Now, remove the cap on the water reservoir, fill to the desired level, and replace the cap. Push the green button to start the steaming process. How high you filled the reservoir will determine how long the food is steamed, and the Cook-n-Blend will beep to alert you when it’s finished steaming.

After the beep, let it cool for a few minutes and then remove the cooking bowl from the base. Using the included spatula so that you don’t get burned by any residual steam, remove the steam basket from the cooking bowl and pour the cooking liquid into another container. Then pour the steamed ingredients back into the bowl. Replace the lid and put the bowl back on the stand to puree.

The Nuk Cook-n-Blend has two options for puree, smooth or chunky, depending on what stage of food your baby is ready for. You can also either hold the knob continuously for a smoother puree, or your can pulse the knob for even chunkier blends, similar to how you would use a food processor. Simply choose what texture you’d like and blend. You can also add a little of the cooking liquid to get a thinner puree if necessary.

That’s it! You’ve made fresh food from whole ingredients for your baby! I have to say, it was pretty tasty. With the Cook-n-Blend, the food tastes fresh and bright and retains the flavor of the ingredients you used. I could clearly taste the peach and apricots.

Steaming fresh fruits and vegetables helps to preserve the nutrients in your baby’s food. If you don’t want to steam the ingredients, the Cook-n-Blend comes with a special smoothie blade so you can puree fresh fruits and vegetables into nutritious smoothies that your baby and the whole family can enjoy.

With the large cooking bowl, you can make up to 4 servings at once and freeze what you don’t use for later. I can see myself having a Cook-n-Blend session each weekend to make a week’s worth of fresh baby food to store in the freezer. It would also be very easy to use it while making dinner for the rest of my family at the same time. The cooking bowl and other accessories are all dishwasher safe, making clean up painless.

With one machine, I can cook and puree baby foods, make smoothies, and save money over the cost of purchasing canned baby food at the store. This is a relief, I know my baby will be getting the best nutrition with no preservatives and he can enjoy nutrient packed foods with fresh flavors. My little man isn’t quite ready for solids yet, but I’m excited to introduce them when the time is right with the Nuk Freshfoods™ Cook-n-Blend.

  • This looks awesome! I’d really love to get this for my nephew who has just started solids! His big brother had a texture sensitivity and was eating baby food for a very long time!

  • Wondering what the price point is on this product. I really like the idea that it can be made it small batches for, freshness and that you can cook it in the same unit. all u need is a knife to dice things up and all the mess is in one container. There are more beneifts than just cooking it and knowing the food ingredients, as u also dont have to concern yourself with packaging and plastics or glass that it was preserved in and chemicals companies used for, that process.

  • I just love these new fangled baby food making gadgets. I made some of my son’s baby food (he’s 5 now). I had to use the stove for steaming and my blender to puree. I always ended up with some giant chunks in the mix and it was really difficult to get all of the puree cleaned out of the blender. Plus, all the dishes I dirtied in the process. I sure wish a device like this had been around back then!
