Family Friendly Hike In San Diego: Torrey Pines State Beach Was Awesome!

Looking for a fun, family friendly hike for kids in San Diego? The Torrey Pines State Nautral Reserve beach hike is IT!

I have done a bunch of hikes in SoCal, I enjoy trying new ones that I come across. My 8 year old is fine with most of them, but my 4 year old would poop out midway and ask to be carried. No ma’am! I found the perfect hike for all of us at the Torrey Pines State Reserve. This beach hike starts uphill, winds down slowly through the mountain on a marked dirt trail and spits you out on the golden sand in front of the crashing waves. Not bad at all!

Walking through the mountain was a fun adventure. We spotted lots of different flowers, bushes and pine trees, and the local wildlife was out and about. We saw lizards, squirrels, caterpillars, birds and a bunch of red ants. On a warm day, you’ll probably get parched so be sure to bring a bottle of water for each hiker.

Once you get to the top, the view of the Pacific Ocean is stunning! This photo does no justice.

How to get to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

The beach area is in between La Jolla and Del Mar, off of the interstate 5. From Hwy 5, exit on Carmel Valley Road and drive west for about 1.5 miles till you reach the Coast Highway 101. Turn left and proceed along the beach for about a mile. The park entrance is on your right just before the highway begins to climb the Torrey Pines grade. (source
