My son is 9 years old, and he really enjoys creating, solving problems, and building various vehicles and structures. This roller coaster is a fun challenge for children to see how different pieces can fit together to create something awesome! The K’NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster stands 2.5 feet tall and comes with 580 connecting parts, including over 14 feet of track and a motorized chain lift! If you have holiday STEM gifts on your list, the K’NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster is a great choice for those future engineers who love to build!

To get started, my son emptied the pieces out of the box and little sister helped to sort them into piles. This roller coaster is no quick set up toy – it is a real, working roller coaster that requires much time and attention to detail. The instruction booklet uses photos with very little wording, but the directions are clear and easy to follow. This coaster builds from the bottom up, it can be set up on a table, hard wood floor, or on the carpet.

Piece by piece, it’s starting to come together! Each piece is to be securely snapped into each other to insure a sturdy roller coaster. The base is the first part to be built, and as you can see, the right side is going to be the highest part of the coaster! I wanted to help out, so I tried to add a few different parts and my son had it down before I could figure it out. Smarty pants!

Below, you’ll see that we’ve put the coaster tracks onto the base and we’re installing the black chain. This is the part that is connected to the little green motor, it cranks up the roller coaster car and sends it flying off into wild twists and turns!

K'NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster review

Set the video games aside – the K’NEX Wild Whiplash Roller Coaster is such a fun STEM project for kids to work on, it is at the top of my list of holiday STEM gifts! My 9 year old did a great job, he even helped his little sister put a few pieces together for him. I highly recommend this, it is a wonderful activity challenges future engineers to create and build. They will be thrilled when they see the finished product: a high speed, motorized roller coaster that whips and lashes around the 14-foot track!
