My sister and I love to travel together, and our recent excursion was right up the California coast and a tad bit inland to Solvang, California. This little Danish village is absolutely adorable, I am so glad that we took the weekend road trip up to visit! Solvang is about a 3 hour drive up the 101 from Los Angeles, it’s actually a nice road trip with gorgeous views of the mountains and hills.

1. Stroll along Mission Drive, the main road into Solvang
Most of the action can be found right on Mission Drive. There are lots of things to do here, you can try many of Solvang’s restaurants, shop at their cute boutiques, view the fun sights (keep your eyes peeled for Danish style windmills and architecture), and enjoy a calm pace in a quaint Danish village.
2. Drink plenty of wine
When you’re planning a day trip to Solvang California, you cannot forget the wine! Solvang is located in the Santa Ynez Valley, which is a prime position for wineries and harvesting grapes. There are lots of wineries in the main village, as well as off the beaten path. Visitors are welcome year round to enjoy these award winning wines, take a wine tour or explore some of the vineyards and tasting rooms on your own! We personally loved the Buttonwood Farm Winery, super cute vineyard with delicious varietals.
3. Stop in and sample the sweets at a Danish bakery
Walk around the quaint little Solvang village for a few minutes and you’ll see that there is no shortage of Danish bakeries to try! Choose from fruit filled pastries, butter rings, napoleans, puff pastries, chocolate eclairs, traditional Danish pastries using original recipes, and some places have Æbleskiver, or Danish sausage.
4. Explore Solvang’s museums and missions
Solvang is bursting with things to do, and their variety of different museums and missions are perfect for history buffs who want to learn more. Old Mission Santa Inez is one of the original California missions, and is one of the most popular attractions in the city. Also, explore Danish museum, natural history, art, western heritage, Native American museums, and there’s even a a vintage motorcycle museum!

Choose from outdoor parks, a nature center, museums, arts and theater, farms, a miniature horse ranch, and even an Ostritch farm! Families can also ride around the village on a horse drawn trolley, or choose to rent bikes, strollers, wheelchairs, and segways for a casual ride together.
