5 Good Dental Hygiene Tips For Children That They Need To Learn NOW

We just finished our semi-annual visits to the dentist, and all is well in my kids’ mouths! I feel like I am doing a pretty good job with my kids’ teeth, they brush morning and night, rinse with a fluoride mouthwash, and floss their back teeth as much as I can get them to. I learned that it is pretty important to start a proper oral hygiene routine early with your kids, even as babies!

To bring awareness to the importance of oral care, the American Dental Association has designated February as National Children’s Dental Health Month. Early oral care is so important, and we really have to make sure to teach our children how to properly care for their teeth and gums. Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in kids and adolescents age 6-19? This is terrible news, which could affect their teeth through their entire lives. We’ve got to stay on top of it with these tips and information from Know Your OTC’s.

5 Good Dental Hygiene Tips For Children To Teach Them Now

1. We all know this one: Adults and children should brush their teeth at least twice a day with an anti-cavity paste or gel, or as directed by a dentist or healthcare provider. I have to mention this, it’s crazy to say that some people do not brush their teeth day and night. This probably means that they are not having their kids do it, either. Please don’t be this person!

2. The use of fluoride is MUST. It is an anti-cavity active ingredient available in over-the-counter (OTC) products that helps prevent tooth decay and cavities. As always, follow the instructions on the tooth paste package when using.

3. You should be dabbing a little bit of tooth paste with fluoride on your kids’ teeth each day as soon as they cut through the gums.

4. Children age 6 and under should always be supervised when brushing their teeth until they are able to master it correctly (usually around age 8). Use only a pea-sized amount of tooth paste on their toothbrush and make sure they spit it all out.

5. Visit a dentist early and often! You don’t want to wait for your kids to experience a tooth ache, it’s too late at that point. The fact that 20% of kids have cavities from ages 5-11 is bad news! Your dentist is able to clean the teeth, see problem spots that you cannot, and educate parents by providing prevention tips and oral treatment recommendations if needed.
