Zoe Saldana Gamora Interview: Embracing A Role of Female Empowerment #GOTGvol2event

We got the chance to sit down and do a Zoe Saldana Gamora Interview at the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 movie press day in Los Angeles with Disney. Saldana talks female empowerment and embracing her role as Gamora!

Zoe Saldana Gamora Interview for the Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 movie - Embracing A Role of Female Empowerment #GOTGvol2event

There’s so much to say about Zoe Saldana, she’s a gorgeous actress who happens to play the lead female, Gamora, in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. But this is not the first time that she’s taken on such a role. She has played the “kick a$$ science fiction females” role in this and other major films for over 10 years, and is learning to embrace it.

Zoe Saldana Gamora Interview: Embracing A Role of Female Empowerment

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Zoe Saldana is Gamora

During the Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 movie event, the Zoe Saldana Gamora interview was the one I was most looking forward to. I mean, although the roles she takes on are just “roles”, she really does bring about a sense of strength and empowerment to look up to. In all honesty, Saldana said she was kind of tired of playing these super sci-fi female roles, and that she’d like to take a break from it. But then she gets real and references her personal favorite strong women in film as a child…

Growing up, when I was little, I only had two icons that I can reference, and I would watch those movies until my tape would break. And it was Ellen Ripley from Aliens, and it was Sarah Connor from Terminator. And I would watch these movies endlessly. Then it was like, Jamie Lee Curtis, when Katherine Bigelow did that movie, Blue Steel, and James Cameron also did that movie True Lies, I had her as a reference. But other than that, I was always like, watching action movies told through the eyes of males, but always feeling that gap, that void, you know?

Oh, we TOTALLY know. We lived it as well, which is why we think her character is so amazing for our girls who are growing up watching her! Saldana also says that she is not really like this in real life, her sister Cicely is more like Gamora. So, she decided to be happy with the fact that she took a chance on the role and got a sequel out of it, and suddenly it clicked…

I wanted to acknowledge that maybe it means something. Maybe it is important that I’m a part of those women that are filling in that gap, so that women can have more options, more references to look into.”

She is THAT GIRL. The one she herself, and many of us, used to watch and love as a child. And it is AWESOME. Here’s a fabulous take away from Saldana for our little girls who are watching Gamora on screen. We see Gamora as a super strong kick a$$ fighter, when really, there’s much more to her…

I think that it’s okay to still be vulnerable, and be strong. I think that for some reason, we take it upon ourselves, or we’re told that you have to be one thing or the other. And I think that vulnerability is strength, and being strong means that you have to be vulnerable.”

Gamora shows a little bit more of a vulnerable side to her, but does not lack in strength whatsoever. I love this message!
