The past few nights, my daughter has been a complete sleeping mess. She has woken up at least SIX times each night, for what seems to be no reason at all…
A little background:
Baby Girl has been sleeping through the night since she was about 4 months old. I’m talking a good 8-10 hours before waking up in the morning. She stopped waking up for a bottle around this time too and, aside from a relapse here and there, she has stuck to it ever since.
Since Monday, Baby Girl has been going to sleep at her usual time, falling asleep just fine. Once the middle of the night hits, say 3-4am, she wakes up the entire neighborhood! A little fussing, tossing and turning here and there is normal for her. But the waking up 6+ times screaming her head off is NOT.
I know that babies are ever changing and growing, but I just can’t seem to put my finger on what the heck has gotten into her. I feel like I have tried everything and to no avail. She finally falls back asleep in the next couple of hours after we have gone back and forth with her. Me and hubs are getting tired out!
Here’s what we have tried:
- Pacifier – Our most coveted go-to solution [try this at home]. This normally works, pop it in her mouth and she’s knocked out! Not this week. Once you leave the room, she’s at it again. There are a few times that it has fallen out of the crib that she needed it rescued. But only a FEW.
- Food – This girl had a voracious appetite and can eat! She is currently eating fresh foods, veggies, fruits, meats, cheese, yogurt, and whatever I make for dinner and has a few bottles of Gerber Good Start formula in between meals [I recommend, all other formulas were bad news]. I won’t go back to feeding her in the middle of the night, but I tried giving her more milk before she lays down to go to sleep.
- Discomfort -Could she be hot? Cold? Have a headache? Gassy? Teething? I thought it could be teething since she has none yet but I do not see any signs of teeth coming soon. I checked her out and her temperature was fine, so was the temp. in the room. As far as the headache and/or gas, really? Every night for 4 nights in a row?
- Rocking – I am totally against this, well not totally, but I do not want to get into the habit of picking her up and rocking her at 4am and have her thinking that this is the norm. NOT. AT. ALL. Tough Love. But… I tried it, after the umpteenth (is that a real word?) time that she woke up. She was obviously in distress. So I did it. I picked her up, rocked her in my arms and she loved it. Dosing off, I put her back into the crib with her pacifier and all hell broke loose. Never again.
I am hoping this is a phase. A very short lived phase. I know that all kids are different, but I do not remember having to go through this with MJ. They both have been very good sleepers. Maybe now that she’s sitting up at her own will and standing in her crib she just wants to go, go, GO!
