The #1 Way To Get Kids to Willingly Clean Up at Home

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Green Works. I received a product sample to facilitate my review and promotional item as a thank you.

Kids chores, doing the dishesWe all owe it to our children to teach them to clean up after themselves and help out with the household chores. It’s a team effort, teaching them responsibility, consideration, and makes them take up for their actions around the house. Sure, rewards charts, treats and other incentives are great. But how can I really get my kids to help clean up at home without a fuss or fight?

Honestly, you’ve got to get them cornered to a place where it motivates them the most: GAMES.

Every child I know, including my own, has this slight addiction to gaming. Xbox, iPad, Wii, Playstation, online games, you name it,  would make them jump in a heart beat and perform pretty much whatever task I choose to give them. Take out the trash. Check. Pick up toys and clothes around the house. Check. Wipe down the kitchen counter. Check.

Because when they do, they can play their game of choice. When they don’t, we withhold game time. Due to our strict policy on gaming in our household, that’s a huge incentive for them.

Green Works Natural cleaning products

We have been teaching our kids to green our routine at home by recycling, limiting water usage, reusing what we can, and using green household products. Since my kids are pretty involved with cleaning, I don’t like to use chemicals, bleaches, and other toxic cleaners. I try to make an orange or lemon version of a homemade natural cleaner, but some other green cleaning products are just as great. I have used Green Works all-purpose cleaner, it’s natural and safe to use on multiple surfaces without costing an arm and a leg to buy. I have no problem giving my 6 year old the Green Works spray bottle and letting him spray away.

Tons of Green Works Fun!

My son jumps to help out around the house when his games are on the line, and I know he’s going to jump at this. In case you need any more cleaning incentive for your kids, Green Works has put together a bunch of fun online word games on their Pinterest page that can make cleaning just a bit more fun! It’s sort of like an online scavenger hunt with word games and Pinterest fun, you could even win $500! Here’s how to play:
