Should I Go See Disney’s Zootopia With My Family? An Age Based Review #ZootopiaEvent

Disney’s ZOOTOPIA is finally out in theaters, it really is a cute movie! There’s been so much fuss about it around the web and on TV, and I know that we all have different aged kids in our families, so you might be asking, “Should I go see Zootopia?”

The easy answer is a resounding YES. But I know, you’re looking for a little more than that.

Zootopia may be an animated movie about animals, but it was specifically made to please the masses. See, there are so many layers to the film that there is really something for everyone, and Zootopia Directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore did such a great job at that! Whether you’re 4, 14 or 44, you’re going to enjoy yourself, I am a fan of the witty lines and clever jokes, most of the animals have species related names and the characters are darn cute. Here is an age by age breakdown of what you’ll like and what to look out for:

Disney's Zootopia Movie

Should I go see Disney’s Zootopia with my family?

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery.

Ages 0-2

This is a fun, action packed movie in that the animals and animation are great, but babies and toddlers will not understand the vast majority of the film. Also, kids this age are pretty busy and unpredictable, so sitting in a movie theater for an hour and a half might be too much for them. I am sure they would enjoy the movie, but use your own discretion!

Ages 3-6

This is the perfect age where kids start understanding and following the story line. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are instant favorites, my daughter is 5 and she can’t stop talking about them! There are so many silly parts where the animals run, dance, jump around, play, chase each other and more, and the story line about Judy Hopps becoming a police officer is wonderful, she’s truly a role model that pursues her dreams. If your child is sensitive, there is a scene that is mildly intense where Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are being chased by a rogue jaguar. My 5 year old was fine with it, but I know how some kids this age can be!

Ages 7-10

There is an overall silliness that kids this age like about Zootopia. My son is going on 9 years old and he thought that lots of parts were funny and the action packed scenes were among his favorites. He also liked the fact that animals were living like humans do in a real city, using smartphones and all! This age group can start to understand the underlying message in the movie, which addresses prejudice, the need for equality, fighting discrimination and how hurtful it can be.

Ages 11-14

This tween and teenage group can be tough to please, but I really think they’ll find some of the action, humor and serious scenes worth their while.  They will stay engaged and be entertained! There was a tween looking child next to me and she was cracking up at the tigers dancing at the end of the movie during Gazelle’s performance, so was my son! There is a scene where the main characters visit a nudist colony to help solve the big crime, and I am sure this age group was snickering in their seats!

Ages 15+

I don’t know about you, but I love a good Disney animated film and I think that there are many young and old adults that agree. They’re always so well done, so fun, creative, lighthearted, comedic, adventurous and slightly sentimental! Zootopia is no exception, and as a parent, I love the over all story line and message mentioned above and I love the fact that Judy Hopps is such a go-getter. She’s a great role model for sure, and withstands the bullies, the naysayers, and prevails against all odds! Older teens and adults should look out for the scene with the slow moving sloths at the DMV, and I also got a kick out of the Breaking Bad and The Godfather references. Pure comedic genius!

The city of Zootopia

It looks like Walt Disney Animation has done it again! I’ve seen Zootopia twice already and I will go again for a third time if necessary, it’s so fun! The animation and special effects make me want to visit Zootopia, it’s a gorgeous city! If you’re still asking, “should I go see Disney’s Zootopia?” Uhhhh – YES! This is a must-see family film, take the whole gang to see Zootopia, out in theaters NOW!
