Who’s got little Star Wars fans? They will absolutely love the Star Wars Rebels TV show, a fun animated series on Disney XD! Learn more about it from Executive Producer Dave Filoni.
When I was in San Francisco for the Rogue One press event, they added a truly awesome segment to our day – a screening of some of the upcoming episodes of Star Wars Rebels, and an interview with the Executive Producer of the Star Wars Rebels TV show, Dave Filoni! If you’ve got little Star Wars fans, this show is so much fun!
If you’re not familiar, Star Wars Rebels is an animated TV series that explores the beginnings of the Rebellion, while the Empire spreads tyranny through the galaxy.
This animated entry in the “Star Wars” franchise fills the gap between the events of “Episode III” and “Episode IV.” Imperial forces occupy a remote planet and are ruling — and ruining — its inhabitants’ lives with an iron fist. A clever, disparate crew aboard the starship Ghost takes a stand against the Empire, facing new villains and colorful adversaries. The rebels on the Ghost include leader Kanan, ace pilot Hera, feisty heroine Sabine, tough guy Zeb and 14-year-old con artist Ezra. – Wikipedia
All About Star Wars Rebels TV Show with Executive Producer Dave Filoni!
Here’s a little about what we learned about the creation and execution of Star Wars Rebels TV show from Dave Filoni:
Star Wars Rebels loosely ties into Rogue One, helped to introduce Saw Gerrera
When the Star Wars Rogue One movie was being filmed, they happened to have offices right next to Dave Filoni’s and collaborated quite a bit. Filoni says that he “helped introduced the character of Saw. So when they were doing stuff with him in the movie, my office is right next to Kiri Hart of the Story Group (for Rogue One). And we talk all the time, and ask questions. And then I got to meet Forrest Whittaker, so it’s really just like any good storytelling.” Whittaker was on board for Star Wars Rebels TV show, so now you’ll have to keep an eye out for him as Saw Gererra in Star Wars Rebels as well as the Rogue One movie!
Filoni has worked closely with George Lucas and learned a few tricks
Mainly it was editorial, how to look at the story, how to cut the story, how to move things. I torment everybody with it. And the script in that sense is just a beginning point. So the scripts that will always go the easiest for me is the ones that I write ahead of time. Cause I know how I’m gonna shoot it the whole time. But there’s how you write something, and there is how it needs to be shot.
Filoni tells us that Lucas would always say, “Dare to be great.” There’s always some sort of fear that holds you back from greatness, and it can be hard to get past that. Daring to be great – that’s the real premise of the Force of Star Wars!
Filoni strives to create Star Wars Rebels as a show that families can watch together
Star Wars was originally created for kids, per George Lucas, there is such a fun mystery and awe with the franchise. Filoni wants to keep it that way, but add a few quips that appeal to parents. “My whole goal is never to take that experience away from kids, is to involve everybody in it, to make it a place where the best compliment we can give for the series is that it’s something that the family watches together.” There is a great balance between kid friendly and adult appeal, and Filoni does a good job at it! I am hooked, my kids are hooked, and we really enjoy watching the show together.
