Did you know that when you talk, read, and sing to your kids, it helps them with language, speech, and brain development? We are partnering with First 5 California to share the ways you can incorporate these simple activities each day!
We all know that reading is fundamental. It serves as the foundation for educational success. But did you know that parents and caregivers should also talk and sing with their kids each day – from the moment they’re born – to help them get on the right learning path? That’s right, spend some time every day talking, reading, and singing with your kids as soon as they are born. You will help their brains make early connections for language, sounds, and speech that will make their future more successful!
My kids are great readers, and I like to think that it’s because we’ve read to them both from quite early on. Luckily, I knew about the benefits of reading to infants when my kids were born, so I have been reading to both of them since they were babies. We reserve 30 minutes before bedtime each night to read books and talk about our day. I do lots of reading with my kids, but now that my older son is an independent reader, he helps read with his sister. I love these moments!
How To Talk, Read, and Sing To Your Kids Every Day
First 5 California has teamed with Scholastic to create a variety of resources and activities to help parents, teachers, and caregivers. Here’s how you can get talking, reading, and singing with your kids every day…
Reading at home – You can do more than just reading books at bedtime. Take advantage of the activities, songs, reading charts, posters, cut out activity ideas, and flip books provided by First 5 California. They are full of colorful illustrations and parent instructions to lead children on fun little tasks to engage them in song, language and speech each day. Resources are available in both English and Spanish.
In the classroom – Similar to the above reading at home materials, teachers have access to all of those activities, plus additional lessons and classroom charts to support their efforts. If your child is in early preschool or kindergarten, tell their teacher about these amazing, free resources!
On the go! – First 5 California knows that we are busy parents, and it’s easy to forget to talk, read, and sing to your kids every day. They have created an app for your smartphone that is full of activities and prompts, and even reminders. It is so convenient if you’re constantly on the go like we are!
