A Winter Family Getaway in Big Bear, California: Tips, Activities & What to Expect
If you’re dreaming of a cozy winter escape filled with snow play, mountain adventures, and family-friendly fun, Big Bear, California, is the perfect destination. Just a short drive from Southern California cities like San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County, Big Bear offers an easy, affordable winter getaway—especially for families experiencing snow for the first time.

As San Diegans, we don’t exactly “do” snow. My kids had never seen it, so we decided to take an impromptu weekend staycation to Big Bear—and it turned out to be one of our most memorable trips! Between tubing down snowy hills, soaking in peaceful lake views, and exploring the cozy mountain village, Big Bear gave us the perfect mix of winter magic and sunshine.
Why Visit Big Bear in Winter?
You’re gonna love these family activities in Big Bear! Even when Southern California temperatures feel like summer, Big Bear delivers a true winter experience thanks to high elevations and snow-making at local resorts. Visitors can enjoy:
- Snow play and tubing
- Skiing and snowboarding
- Cozy cabin and lodge stays
- Lake and mountain views
- Charming shops and restaurants
- Kid-friendly winter attractions
During our trip, temperatures near the lake were a comfortable 60°F, so the sun was shining bright. Snow in Big Bear Lake happens every winter, but sometimes it comes earlier – or later – than others. Luckily for us, we were still able to play in the snow in the mountains, and they were making artificial snow at some of the snow play venues — the best of both worlds!
