Step-by-Step Guide to Making Valentine Heart Suncatchers

Step 1: Prepare Your Heart Template

Start by preparing a heart-shaped template. Fold your construction paper in half, hamburger style (see photo below). On the closed side of the folded paper, cut out a large half heart. You can either print a heart from the internet or freehand draw one your piece of paper.

Once you have your heart template, use it to trace the shape onto the folded construction paper.

The size of the heart will depend on how big or small you want your suncatcher to be. If you’re working with children, keep the heart sizes moderate—too large and it may be difficult for them to fill with colorful tissue paper.

Next, cut a smaller heart out from the inside of the larger heart in the same fashion. We cut along the inside so that we had about a 1-inch frame.

Step 2: Glue the heart frame to make the base

Now you’ll create the base with wax paper and glue to adhere the heart frame. Measure and tear off a piece of wax paper that will fit your heart frame. Add glue to the backside of your heart frame and stick it onto the middle of your wax paper. Give the heart craft a few minutes to dry.

Next, cut around the outside of the frame to remove the excess wax paper.

If you prefer a more intricate design, try drawing smaller hearts or fun patterns along the edges. Adding swirls, dots, or even the word “love” can give your suncatcher a special touch. Let your creativity flow, as this part of the project will help personalize each suncatcher!

Step 3: Add Tissue Paper to the Inside of the Heart

Now comes the fun part—adding the colorful tissue paper to your Valentine heart suncatcher! Cut the tissue paper into small squares, rectangles, or irregular shapes. Flip over the heart and begin to glue the tissue paper squares onto the back of the wax paper, starting from the center and working your way outwards. Arrange the tissue paper pieces onto the glue, overlapping them slightly to create a patchwork effect.

Feel free to mix different colors to create a beautiful contrast or stick to shades of red, pink, and white for a more traditional Valentine’s Day look. If you have it, you can also add a little sparkle by sprinkling glitter on top of the glue before the tissue paper dries.

Step 4: Let the Glue Dry

Once you’ve filled the entire heart with tissue paper and added any additional embellishments, set your heart suncatcher aside and let it dry completely. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes, but be sure to check that the glue has set well before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Hang Your Valentine Heart Suncatcher

Finally, hang your finished heart suncatcher by a window where it can catch the sunlight. We used a little bit of clear tape, rolled it inside out, and added a couple of pieces to the back to stick the hearts into the window. Easy on, easy off!

You’ll be amazed at how the light filters through the tissue paper, creating beautiful, colorful patterns on your walls and floors. These suncatchers will instantly brighten up your space and create a warm, festive atmosphere for Valentine’s Day.

Optional Step 6: Punch a Hole and Add the String

If you want to hang up your suncatcher with string instead of tape, you can follow this optional step. Once your suncatcher is dry, use a hole puncher to create a hole at the top of the heart shape. Make sure the hole is large enough to thread a piece of string or ribbon through so you can hang it up easily.

Choose a length of string or ribbon that will allow your suncatcher to hang in a visible spot by a window. Tie a knot at the top and ensure that it’s secure enough to hold the suncatcher without falling.
