Rogue One: Here’s What Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen Want You To Know

When we were in San Francisco with Disney for the Rogue One Star Wars press day, we sat down and chatted with Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen, cast members in the movie! Tudyk plays K2SO, a droid who was formerly with the Empire, but has been reprogrammed by Captian Cassian Andor, leader of the rebellion. He becomes a soldier in the rebel alliance to fight the evil forces of the Empire, which gave him a bit of freedom in his personality. Tudyk says that this “invites some brutal honesty in moments where honesty isn’t really required, and he can be funny in that way… and sarcastic, and… passive-aggressive, and all those fun things that sort of sidekicks would—although they’re partners.”

Mikkelsen character Galen Erso is a scientist who’s previously worked with “Dr. Krennik on a project that has the potential to make the world a better place, and also the potential of not doing so.” He is also Jyn’s father, and he is willing to do what he can to protect his family.

Both Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen are no strangers to the Disney family. Tudyk recently played the animated rooster “Hei Hei” in Disney’s Moana, and Mikkelsen played the villainous Kaecilius in Doctor Strange. The two of them really are able to get into their characters in Rogue One, amazing performances by both!

Read a little bit about what Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen told us in their Rogue One interview…

Rogue One: Here’s What Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen Want You To Know

Life on set with the Rogue One cast was fun and playful

Tudyk says that they all got along really well on set. He says that they played around a lot between takes, and thinks that Diego is hilarious! He also says that Felicity Jones, who plays Jyn, is a super hard worker and leader on set.

Mikkelsen says that he didn’t have very many scenes with a lot of the actors, he spent time with Ben Mendelsohn (Krennic) and Felicity Jones (Jyn).

There were definitely challenges while filming on set

Tudyk’s costume actually caught on fire at one point during the filming! Here’s how he decribes one of the action scenes:

So they had built what looked like partially a spaceship, but it was a box where people were in it. One guy’s on a gun, we’re in a battle, running down this beach, the thing comes over, they’ve got it on a crane, it’s got smoke coming out of the bottom, it lands, troops go out either side, it takes back off again, soldiers are hitting these things that are vaulting them in the air, and falling like that, explosions. Then, they’re like, “That’s your track – aim for that.” You don’t wanna get off it because you’ll catch fire!

Mikkelsen actually had to travel to Iceland for some of his Rogue One scenes. In “my very first scene, I’m walking and it was raining constantly. It was just pouring down. It was windy, chilly, and I was like, ‘God, we’re done here’ but it was such a beautiful place. I love Iceland. And we’re going back to the studio, but they came up with this brilliant idea that all the shots inside in the studio should be… in rain. So basically, I am wet the whole film. Those were cold and long days, but it’s worth it. It looks fantastic on film.

Heroes vs. Villains

Both Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen enjoy playing heroes and villains, Mikkelsen says that “they go hand in hand. You gotta find something likeable, something you can relate to in a bad guy.” Tudyk  thinks heroes and villains are both awesome, as long as they’ve got some humor. That’s what makes a good character! You can catch Alan Tudyk and Mads Mikkelsen in Rogue One, out in theaters Friday December 16th!
