Looking for a family SUV? This 2018 VW Atlas review will help you decide! I took a hosted trip to San Antonio, Texas with Volkswagen to drive the new SUV, it is loaded with all of the fabulous features you love at a great price!
What’s the best way to get a feel for a new vehicle? Spend a couple of days driving it and playing around with the features! I will be in the market for a new car soon, and with busy days, my kids, and all of our belongings in tow, an SUV might fit the bill. I met up with the good folks at Volkswagen in Boerne, TX to test drive the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SUV, we had a fabulous time!
I had never been to Texas, so I was excited to take a drive around the city of San Antonio and its outskirts. We stayed at the beautiful Tapatio Springs Resort, a gorgeous property located in the Texas Hill Country on a picturesque golf course! I took on the windy roads in the hills and enjoyed the performance of the VW Atlas, it seats 7 passengers with a 3rd row, offering plenty of space for my family. The Atlas has a clean, yet powerful design, and features the latest breakthrough technology, the top safety features, tons of cargo space, and an affordable price point, making this the perfect family SUV! 2018 VW Atlas Review: An Affordable Family SUV Packed With Features!
The VW Atlas is a Volkswagen has taken their top quality standards and craftsmanship they are known for and applied them to their largest vehicle yet. The Atlas is priced starting at $33,500, there are so many great details packed into this new VW SUV, it is going to be hard to top all of these features at such a low price point! After driving the Atlas, I can tell you all about what I love most. It is definitely a front runner in my SUV search.
Interior and exterior design
The interior and exterior of the VW Atlas are both quite stylish and well thought out. The interior boasts seating for 7 adults with room for all of their luggage, a 2nd row with captains chairs (easily fits 3 car seats!), an easy access 3rd row, a good amount of legroom and headroom, and lots of flexible cargo space. On the exterior, you’ll see nice clean lines and a powerful look with 20″ alloy wheels and a fabulous panoramic sunroof running the length of the whole car! Parents with their hands full of groceries or toddlers will love the remote lift trunk door, as well as the option for a hands-free power lift gate – just wave your foot under the rear bumper of the car to activate.
Breakthrough technology
If a digital cockpit, touch screen entertainment and navigation system, App Connect® for your smartphone, and loads of driver assistance features fit your fancy, know that the Atlas has them all! The digital cockpit allows you to toggle through the instrumentation, switch driver settings, and see a large sized map view right in front of you while driving, all on your steering wheel! I also like how you can connect your smartphone and browse apps on your navigation screen and play your music, or enjoy Sirius XM on your 480 watt Fender Premium Audio System. Other tech to note: remote start, 3 zone automatic climate control, USB ports, rear view and overhead camera, and driver assistance, which helps with changing lanes, blind spots, parking, cruise control, traffic alerts, and more! This is one of my favorite parts of the 2018 VW Atlas review, there is so much amazing technology that’s perfect for ease of use for a connected family.
Safety features galore
Volkswagen is committed to creating cars with the top safety standards available, providing peace of mind for all. As a parent, safety is of utmost importance when choosing a vehicle. I am responsible for not only myself, but my whole family, and you can see from my 2018 VW Atlas review that it boasts lots of safety features and specs throughout the vehicle. It is made with a high strength steel exterior frame, a front end safety cage, and an intelligent crash response system, which automatically unlocks the doors, turns off the fuel pump, and activates the hazard lights in case of collision. Another safety feature that is pretty impressive is the Automatic Post-Collision Braking system. Accidents rarely stop at the first impact, so this system helps to slow the vehicle after a collision to reduce the chances of further impacts.
Performance and handles
Testing out the handles on this car was a lot of fun! We journeyed through the hills, onto highways, and even dirt roads, and I was impressed with the smooth ride. The car is an SUV, but doesn’t feel overwhelming for a 5’4″ woman to drive. The 2018 VW Atlas will be available with two types of engines: “the 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® four cylinder with 235 horsepower or the available 3.6-liter VR6 engine with 276 horsepower.” Whether we’re headed on a family road trip to the beach, the mountains, or the desert for the weekend, the Volkswagen Atlas has an 8-speed automatic transmission, 4-MOTION® drive control on the V6 for all terrains, and a 5,000 lb. towing capacity if needed.
