My kids have got it pretty good. I love to get outdoors and active, taking in all of the fun, and of course, my kids are in tow. We’ve been to Disney World, Disneyland for Mickey’s Halloween party, Sea World, Aquatica San Diego, the pumpkin patch, and so many more fun events this year. Add apple picking to the list!
We took a drive from San Diego to Julian, CA where the living is easy. It’s an older town in the mountains that has kept it’s historic buildings and farm-like charm over the years. As soon as you get into the area, you can feel the comforts of a small town. The sights, sounds and smells of Fall are everywhere! They are about an hour drive from us and experience all 4 seasons, we don’t see too much of a seasonal change in San Diego! In the Fall, the apple orchards are in full swing, so we stopped at Calico Ranch Orchard to reap the harvest.
Calico Ranch is a small, family owned orchard right in the heart of town. Ten bucks will get you a nice sized bag of fresh apples or pears, you’ll pick them yourself! Navigate through the many trees they have, or take a break at the picnic tables under the oak trees. If you are not in the picking mood, they have barrels of freshly picked apples of hundreds of varieties that you can sample and purchase.
You are allowed to eat a few of the apples right off of the tree, but don’t climb them.
Our time spent in Julian was the perfect outdoor family time activity. When we finished, we hit up downtown Julian to eat lunch. We found a old school Miner’s Diner with a real soda fountain! The kids loved it! We sampled apple cider at the Julian Cider Mill and devoured some of Mom’s pies. OMG. You must try the apple boysenberry crumb pie with cinnamon ice cream. YUM.
