Read what Dave Bautista thinks about his character Drax In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, his role in this film is quite different, and a little more humorous than it was in the first movie!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens up in theaters this weekend, and I am so excited to finally be able to take my kids to see it! While I was visiting Los Angeles with Disney for the Guardians press day, I got the chance to talk with the some of the cast members of the movie. One of them was Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the movie, and he was quite honest and candid about how he feels about playing his character in volume 2.
Dave Bautista Tells How He Feels About Drax In Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Bautista says that he reads his lines when he gets a new script, and he wasn’t thrilled at first.
“When I first read the script, I wasn’t crazy about it. This is my initial reaction, when I usually get a script I go over my dialogue first. So, I read over my dialogue and for one, I was expecting them to go a different direction with Drax. I thought he was gonna be more of the destroyer. I thought he was gonna be a more comic book Drax, but they were digging more into the funny bits. I don’t find myself funny at all, so when I was reading these lines I was like, they’re not funny.”
But it IS FUNNY. Although he loved the writing, it took him some time to get into liking Drax’s comedic role…
“I thought, wow, this is really a great script. It’s deep. It’s emotional, but I still was a little bit disappointed about my part. Then, the first day we did our table read, I realized it was hysterical!” Bautista continues on about his thoughts on Vol. 2, “I think it’s beautiful, I like it better than the first film. It’s weird. It’s one of those things I feel like the more and more we get into film, the more I am sucked into it. I just get so emotionally like invested in this film. In the first one, I thought was fun and exciting and some parts were very emotional, but not like this one. I felt like I was just totally absorbed in this film.”
He really started to love his character Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy 2! Although he says he likes the second movie better than the first film, he always HATES to see himself on screen!
“I just don’t like watching myself on film. It’s just uncomfortable. At the premiere I just — every time I was on the screen and I knew I was gonna say something — I just kinda put my head down and just try to get through it.” This is crazy to me, because he’s done such a wonderful job playing Drax that I don’t see how he could judge himself the way he does!
So, what can you expect from Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? He’s got the same strength and still carries the lingering heartbreak of losing his family from the first movie. A quirky friendship buds between him and Mantis, which ends up being very necessary. There’s also a lot of humor coming from Drax, listen for his hilarious one liners, random insults, and quite the hearty, boisterous laugh that will have you cracking up!
