Why Torrey Pines Is a Top Pick for Family Hiking

From our recent family outing—me, my 8‑year‑old, and my energetic 4‑year‑old—the Torrey Pines beach trail exceeded expectations. It starts with an easy uphill climb, but quickly transitions into a winding descent on a marked mountain trail through coastal terrain, and ends on the gorgeous beach in front of the crashing waves.

We have done a bunch of hikes in SoCal, and I enjoy trying new ones that I come across. My little one might typically tire out, but the gradual slope and constant ocean views carried us to the golden sand in no time. It’s truly an easy hike for kids in San Diego that keeps them walking (and talking) until the end.

Coastal Views from the Cliffs

As you ascend, sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean unfold—an excellent opportunity to teach kids about coastal ecosystems while keeping them motivated. We spotted waves crashing below and even a distant sailboat, making for an exciting “treasure lookout” on our mini expedition.

Desert Flora & Fun Wildlife

The trail is dotted with Torrey pines, coastal shrubs, and colorful wildflowers. Our kids loved spotting lizards sunning on rocks, squirrels foraging, and even tiny caterpillars inching across the path. A nature scavenger hunt—“Find the pine cone!”—turned the trail into a game.

Beach Finish = Complete Adventure

Reaching the beach felt like winning a prize. The kids raced down to the sand, built castles, and splashed in tide pools. We spent an extra hour there, digging for shells and cooling off—pure bliss.

Walking through the mountain was a fun adventure. We spotted lots of different flowers, bushes, and pine trees, and the local wildlife was out and about. We saw lizards, squirrels, caterpillars, birds, and a bunch of red ants. On a warm day, you’ll probably get parched, so be sure to bring a bottle of water for each hiker.

How to get to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

The beach area is in between La Jolla and Del Mar, off of the interstate 5. From Hwy 5, exit on Carmel Valley Road and drive west for about 1.5 miles till you reach the Coast Highway 101. Turn left and proceed along the beach for about a mile. The park entrance is on your right just before the highway begins to climb the Torrey Pines grade. (source)

Tips for your family’s Torrey Pines hike

Pack water for everyone. Dry coastal air and warm sun can make little ones thirsty fast.
Bring small snacks. Trail mix, fruit slices, or granola bars help maintain energy.
Dress in layers—coastal breezes can turn chilly at the top.
Choose sturdy sneakers or hiking boots—trail surfaces are mostly dirt, with some loose gravel.
