Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn return to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Ravagers Yondu and Kraglin, and we love their performance! Read what they said about their characters in the new movie.
This was the most fun interview of all of them, Michael Rooker is hilarious and had us cracking up the whole time – even Sean Gunn was laughing! Read more about their characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, how Ravagers Yondu and Kraglin characters progress with the Guardians in the movie!
Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn Return As Ravagers Yondu and Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I loved the performance of Ravagers Yondu and Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! Yondu is back and has a leading role, similar to the first movie. Kraglin was a background character at first, but his role becomes much more prominent in Vol. 2.
Michael Rooker is Yondu Udonta
Yondu returns from the first film, where he was He ends up exiled by the Ravagers, but he still has that arrow that he controls by whistling. Rooker was asked about wearing those hideous fake teeth, and it actually affected his whistle. Here’s how they make it happen in the movie…
“The teeth are up in the front, so I form my words and my consonants and sounds more in the back, so it didn’t’ bother me at all with the speaking. What it did do, was it’s very difficult for the whistle. A whistle’s all in the front right where the stupid teeth are. These, we got to fix these because I got to whistle, so they did. I had to relearn a little bit of where I focus the sound for the whistling and stuff. They enhance it [in the movie], but it is my whistle.”
Also, we wanted to know who Rooker’s favorite characters were in the film. Rooker says “I would say, I don’t like working with real humans. Never have. I’m going to go with Rocket and Baby Groot are my favorite, you know. But that being said, Rocket is my friend right here [Sean Gunn] and we worked together day and night doing this. He does all the vocals and all the voice stuff for Rocket [on set].”
Sean Gunn is Kraglin Obfonteri
When we asked Gunn who his favorite character is the movie is, he says, “I don’t know. I like ‘em all in different ways. I love Drax. I mean, I think loved sort of the journey that I’ve seen Dave take from his audition for the first movie through this. I think, magnificent performance he gives in this movie and so, I don’t know. I guess if I had to choose, I’d say Dave, but I love all the characters in the movie.”
Sean Gunn and James Gunn (Director) are brothers, and he says that he’s been working with his brother on screen for a long time, since they were little! “I have an easier time working with him than just about anybody because we have such a shorthand for communicating with one another and I know for the most part, what he’s looking for. When I read scenes, I have a pretty good feel for what he’s going for.”
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, this is a spoiler but I have to address it! Scroll down if you don’t want to see it….
Ok, so if you did see the movie, you know that Michael Rooker’s character Yondu dies, and they have this somber funeral scene. We asked what it was like to film that scene, and Sean Gunn had a fun behind the scenes fact about it:
“When we’re doing the funeral scene at the end where Chris [Pratt] has his big speech and we’re all there. We’re all super sad and all of the sudden you hear *SNORES* Rooker was out. I would never forget that, so funny!”
