Rogue One Interview- Riz Ahmed’s Star Wars Character Is “Full Of Regret”

The Rogue One movie is almost here, and we heard all about Riz Ahmed’s Star Wars character, Bodhi Rook. He says that he is “full of regret,” you’ll have to see why!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story movie, actor Riz Ahmed is Bodhi Rook

In the new Rogue One movie, Riz Ahmed’s Star Wars character is Bodhi Rook, a pilot for the Empire who defected and joined the rebellion to fight against the evil forces. He lets his conscience be his guide, choosing to fight with the rebels and played an integral part of the operation to stop the creation of the Death Star.

We sat down with Riz Ahmed for an interview during the Rogue One press day in San Francisco, and he told us a lot about his character. “He’s a cargo pilot from this planet called Jedha, which is occupied by the Empire. So, you know, he’s just trying to earn a living. The only show in town, really, is working for the Empire. So he’s a cargo pilot. But the name Bodhi means awakening, so he goes through a kind of awakening, and realizes that this is not the way. He’s got to try and stand up for what he believes in to make a difference, so he takes a big risk and he defects from the Empire to try and help the rebels.”

When asked what traits his character possesses that are similar to his own, Ahmed says that he likes how relatable Bodhi Rook is to lots of people. “He’s just an average Joe who finds himself in a crazy situation. He’s not like Cassian, who’s a rebel spy. He’s not like Baze who’s a hardened assassin, or Jyn, who’s this kind of criminal rebel. He’s just a truck driver, basically. You know? And he finds himself in the middle of this crazy intergalactic heist movie.” Could you imagine?!

And finally, Ahmed chose these three words to describe his character Bodhi Rook:

Full of regret.

Bodhi Rook is regretful for obvious reasons, of course. Ahmed explains that “a lot of the people in this film have got quite a dark history, or have got a past that they’re not proud of. And they’re trying to make things right. That’s what drives em to take big risks, and to link up with other people who you’ve got nothing in common with, really, to try and, you know, fight a cause that’s bigger than any one of them.” Ahmed also says that his Star Wars character Bodhi Rook’s defection is about redemption, or people trying to make things right for themselves and for the people around them.

Don’t miss Riz Ahmed’s Star Wars character Bodhi Rook in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! The movie is coming out this Friday, so make it a point to see it this weekend. You can expect great things from Rogue One and Riz Ahmed – partially because I saw the movie and I am telling you how great it is, and also because Ahmed just received a Golden Globe nomination for his starring role in “The Night Of”, so keep your eyes peeled for him all over the place!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters December 16th!
