We loved chatting with Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards, he told us a lot about what it was like to make the Star Wars movie!
It’s finally here! We’ve been waiting patiently for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and we are so excited it’s out in theaters! When we were in San Francisco at Lucasfilm for the Rogue One press day, we interviewed Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards. The Star Wars franchise is pretty huge, so Edwards talks preparing for the movie, how he overcame the pressure and intimidation of creating a Star Wars film, and how Luke Skywalker helped him in the process!
Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards Talks Making The Star Wars Movie
Edwards did not want to be over prepared for the Rogue One Star Wars movie
Edwards was absolutely thrilled to be able to direct such a huge movie – it’s STAR WARS. With so many expectations, he wanted to make sure that he was letting the process flow organically so they wouldn’t limit themselves, the actors, or the development of the film. Edwards says that they were” trying to become much more of an organic process where the director of photography and I had an agreement that even though it was a massive movie and there’s all this pressure to have a specific plan, we were gonna keep it incredibly fluid.”
Luke Skywalker actually got Edwards into filmmaking, and helped him overcome difficulties and intimidation
Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards grew up watching the Star Wars series, “it’s definitely the reason I got into film making.” He was struck by a line in the original movie where “Luke Skywalker is doing an attack on the Death Star. He’s got the computer, and he turns it off, and someone goes, Luke! You’ve turned off your computer! He goes, it’s okay, I’m all right. He trusts the force.” Edwards took cues from Skywalker, it’s quite motivating – just believe in yourself and go for it. “If you believe you can do something, and you never give up, then you can achieve anything.”
Making a Star Wars movie is quite a feat, especially documenting one of the most important parts of the story
Could you imagine being responsible for the next Star wars blockbuster film?! There’s would be a ton of pressure on your shoulders! Edwards explains that “trying to make a good, or great Star Wars film, or something that lives up to those masterpieces I grew up with is nearly impossible. So it very much became a band of rebels making the film, and we were rebellious! We did things we weren’t supposed to do, there’s a set way of making these big movies and we tried to do things differently.” Edwards said that they would use the last part of the day to film shots of them playing around and doing whatever they wanted, and some of it actually stuck! Lots of stuff you see in the trailer below and some of the still images came from this, and they are great!
The new Star Wars movie is finally out in theaters, and it is absolutely amazing! Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards did a great job, as did all the cast and others involved. It’s unlike any other Star Wars film you’ve seen, the use of technology and special effects is insane, and you’ll be able to put a few pieces of the Star Wars puzzle together once you’ve seen the back story. Go to the movies and see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story today!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters December 16th!
