Are you planning a family trip to Cabo in Mexico? There are so many wonderful attractions, activities, and things to see in Cabo.
Our family took a trip from San Diego to Baja California to visit Cabo and we had such an amazing time! We had been to Cabo San Lucas, so this time, we decided that we would stay in the San Jose del Cabo area. When we travel, we love to eat, lounge, and explore some of the local culture, and San Jose del Cabo has it all!
About the town of San Jose del Cabo
San Jose Del Cabo is a popular beach town that continues to be one of the top vacation destinations in Baja California, Mexico. This area attracts many tourists from all over the world! Many people think of Cabo San Lucas, but these two areas are so different!
It’s perfect for a family vacation and there are lots of things to do in San José Del Cabo for families of all ages. This article will highlight places where families can spend their time in San José del Cabo with attractions for both adults and kids.
San Jose del Cabo vs Cabo San Lucas
San José del Cabo, Mexico is a popular resort town that can be fun to visit with the family. This vacation destination is located on the western coast of Mexico. Many people fly into Los Cabos International Airport, which is very close to San Jose del Cabo, and immediately transfer to Cabo San Lucas, which is another part of the city located 20 miles away.
Cabo San Lucas is the more popular destination for its nightlife and massive beachfront resorts and is much more tourist-heavy. San Jose Del Cabo is a city in Baja California Sur which is located directly on the Pacific Ocean and gives much more of a laid-back, Mexican city-style vibe with lots of historic charm.
Is it worth visiting San Jose del Cabo?
Absolutely! It is definitely worth it. So, what is San Jose del Cabo known for? This is a town with a relaxed, slower pace that features attractions such as the Old Town area, an art district, beautiful resorts, amazing food, day trips, and local tours. There really are lots of reasons to visit San Jose del Cabo!
10 Things to Do in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico
If you are traveling to the town of San José del Cabo and are looking for fun things to do with your family, here is a list of what to do in San Jose Cabo.
1. Explore San Jose del Cabo’s Main Square
The Main Square of San Jose del Cabo is located in the Downtown Old Town area and is a lovely place to visit. This quaint part of town is full of Mexican charm and features an atrium in the Main Square surrounded by Plaza Mijares, restaurants, small stores and gift shops, cathedrals, art galleries and installations, street performances, and more.
This is a popular destination in San Jose del Cabo for travelers to explore. You can stroll the lively, vibrant plaza area at your leisure or visit with a sightseeing tour company.
2. Visit Acre Farms restaurant
Enjoy an amazing culinary experience with an atmosphere that uses natural decor in a botanical sanctuary and a menu that uses local ingredients in their dishes and cocktails.
This a pretty popular eco-friendly farm-to-table restaurant and is located in the Acre Boutique Hotel. It has a working farm on site with animals you can interact with. Also, you can pick up a smoothie or a cup of coffee in their cafe. Learn more here.
3. Take a day trip to Todos Santos
Todos Santos, also known as Magical Town (Pueblo Magico), is a small town located on the southwest side of the Baja California peninsula and makes the perfect day trip from San Jose del Cabo!
Todos Santos is known for its beautiful beaches and tranquil atmosphere. Visitors love the area, which is known for great surfing in the Pacific Ocean and enjoy Mexican culture in a town with vibrant colors, galleries, factories, local food, arts, and crafts. Learn more here.
4. Enjoy tequila and mezcal tasting
Now this one is strictly for the adults! You can find tequila and mezcal tasting in Cabo, and there are a few good locations here in San Jose del Cabo.
There are many options for tequila tasting in San Jose del Cabo, but we stopped at the West Coast Tequila Co. in the Main Square area and really enjoyed it! We were given an overview of all of the types of tequila and sampled several varieties.
Tip: Añejo is typically the most expensive, but always the best!
5. Nature walk in San Jose del Cabo’s Estuary
If you love nature and enjoy viewing wildlife, the San Jose del Cabo Estuary (Estero San Jose) is the perfect place to visit!
Enjoy this natural protected area with a peaceful waterway with several species of wild birds, butterflies, lush plant life, and even a few horses and cows in the nearby farm areas! Learn more here.
6. Stroll through the Arts District
If you are a fan of the arts, San Jose del Cabo has a nice small art area that you can view and enjoy.
The Arts District is located in the Old Town area and is full of galleries and other art installations that are nice to look at. There is a leisurely art walk where you can stroll and enjoy Mexican art under the sunshine.
7. Visit the top beaches in San Jose del Cabo
There are multiple beautiful beaches near San Jose del Cabo. Some are right near the resort and hotel zone areas while others may require a little travel to get to them.
Palmilla Beach is one of the more popular beaches in the area for swimming, while there are other beaches great for fishing, surfing, and splashing around in the water. Read reviews here.
Note that some of the beaches in the area are not for swimming. Pay attention to all signs and instructions as they are there for your safety!
8. Take a food tour through San Jose del Cabo
What is a trip to Mexico without enjoying the best Mexican food that the city has to offer? Get your Mexican food fix in San Jose del Cabo!
You can find many small local Mexican food shops in the Main Square and surrounding areas, as well as fancier restaurants in the resorts, hotels, and along the beaches. Explore the food scene on your own or take a food tour.
9. Go on a whale-watching trip
A great day trip idea from San Jose del Cabo is to go whale watching! These majestic creatures live in the ocean and migrate to warmer waters during the months of December-April.
Look out for humpbacks, gray whales, and even see some dolphin pods, sharks, and more! Explore tours on the Los Cabos tourism site.
10. Take a boat ride to El Arco in Cabo San Lucas
While you’re visiting San Jose del Cabo, you can take a day trip across the sea to visit El Arco down in Cabo San Lucas!
The Arch is a very popular landmark near the Cabo San Lucas area that marks the meeting of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. You can easily get there by boat and explore this natural rock formation where the waves splash and the area attracts sea lions and pelicans, too!
Tip: Take a boat tour that has a clear glass bottom so you can not only see everything above the ocean (sunsets are beautiful here) but all of the colorful fish below!
The top hotels in San Jose del Cabo
When we visited the area, we stayed at the Hyatt Ziva All-Inclusive and loved the property! We do highly recommend this resort. There are a few other good hotel options in San José del Cabo that we have not been to, but other travelers love:
