While we were in LA with Disney, we sat down to interview Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Karen Gillan as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 new characters Mantis and Ayesha, and the highly anticipated reutrn of Nebula!
We interviewed many of the actors in the film, including Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha), and Karen Gillan (Nebula), and learned so much about their roles in the movie! Here’s a little bit about some of the Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 new characters, as well as the return of Nebula, Gamora’s vengeful sister.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 New Characters Mantis, Ayesha, and The Return of Nebula
Pom Klementieff is Mantis
One of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 new characters who has quite a big role in the movie is Mantis, played by Pom Klemetieff. She is an insect/alien looking creature who is sweet, incredibly naive, and helps to bring humor to the film. Mantis ends up creating a friendship with Drax (Dave Bautista) and the two of them together are hilarious! We asked Klementieff how she could deal with the humor on set, “It was really funny but I had to not laugh, just laughing inside. Shes innocent, she’s like a child so whatever he tells her she’s like okay, if you say so.”
Mantis is a pretty strong female character, who could be a role model to many children and young girls who look up to these characters in the media they consume. Klementieff says that she would like for little girls to take this away from her character, “It’s okay to be imperfect and to not be like any everyone else- to be just maybe weird sometimes. That’s what makes you interesting.” Trust me – Mantis is definitely WEIRD, but her presence is very necessary!
Elizabeth Debicki is Ayesha
Ayesha is the ruler of the Sovereign people on an alien planet, with a race of futuristic, genetically modified people coated in metallic gold. She comes into contact with the Guardians very early on in the movie and know that you will definitely see her throughout the film!
The costume that Debicki had to wear is a giant golden dress that is almost entirely metal, “it weighs so much. It takes about three women to [get it on], we used to call it the Ayesha Taco because the whole bottom of the dress is like a great big circular metal thing and they would fold it up like a taco and then I would walk up the stairs.” When you see this dress, you will know exactly what they are talking about!
Debicki says that Ayesha is a merciless leader who will not take no for an answer. Here’s what she likes about her character: “Her moral compass is slightly askew and she’s slightly merciless. But I think, maybe her strength and also that I suppose what I like about her is that she isn’t perfect, she’s actually quite fallible. The irony is they’re genetically modified to be perfect and she’s extremely imperfect.”
Karen Gillan is Nebula
Nebula returns! Now we all know Nebula HATES her sister Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and blames her for so many things, and now were starting to learn why. Karen Gillan does a fabulous job in this film as Nebula, and we get to see her role with her sister play out on screen. It was really neat to hear about the creation of Nebula’s costume and make up each day – it’s no easy feat! Gillan says that her make up “takes about four hours in the morning, and essentially I have the character’s skin glued to my face, which is really as close as I could possibly get to her which is pretty cool. And it's kind of intense and slightly claustrophobic. Its definitely become a part of of my ritual, in terms of like getting into character.” Gillan says that she tried rehearshing without Nebula’s make up on and it didn’t feel right!
Gillan says that she’s enjoying being a part of this movie franchise and all of the fans that come with it. “It’s such a cool sensation actually to be part of something that people actually care about because that’s not always the case, usually you’re trying so hard to just make people care about your project. I mean it just has like this built in fan base and they’re just so accepting and they’re so passionate, they just like they care about all the decisions you make and you just feel like really special for a second!”
