How to make Christmas potpourri in a jar
Rinse your mason jar and dry out with a paper towel, make it look nice and shiny! Tap in a couple of shakes of nutmeg at the bottom of the jar, followed by half of the cranberries.
Next, layer an orange slice, a sprig of rosemary, and a cinnamon stick into the jar. Repeat this step one more time, on until you’ve used all of those ingredients to make the stove top scents.
Take the remaining cranberries and fill to the top of the jar. Grab your lid and separate the inside from the outer rim. Measure a square piece of burlap to fit the lid, cut and place in between the two pieces. Press firmly to secure.
SLOWLY fill your jar with water until it reaches the top. Carefully twist on the burlap covered lid, this step is a little tricky! It will be a tight fit, it took me a couple of tries to make sure the lid was on correctly.
Grab your favorite ribbon or twine, and a gift tag and adorn the jar. I chose red and brown twine from IKEA and made a gift tag for this holiday stovetop air freshener with the instructions on the back. You can make your own, or print mine below (print as a 3 x 5 and fold backwards, glue together and cut out):
How to use the cranberry orange stove top potpourri gift jar
Pour the contents of the jar into a sauce pan or small pot. Simmer over low heat and you should smell the aroma of holiday stove top scents fill the air! The pot should never be dry, add water as necessary. Make these a day or two ahead of time, any longer than that will ruin the contents of the jar.
If you need to, make this version far in advance: Follow all directions above, accept we’ll keep it dry. Do not slice the orange, place a small one in there, whole, and do not add water. You’ll instruct them to slice the orange themselves and add their own water.
