We learned how Kurt Russell got involved with the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 movie as Peter Quill’s father. What a fun Kurt Russell interview!
I am excited to share the next interview in our Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 series is with an awesome, legendary actor – Kurt Russell! Russell plays the role of EGO, Peter Quill’s father, and comes onto the scene quite unexpectedly. Peter Quill’s character learns so much about himself from his father, as well as his history with his mother and what happened in his earlier years while he was with the Ravagers. Russell is such a nice guy, he was thrilled to be in the Marvel/Guardians franchise and told us all about how he got involved with the movie…
Here’s How Kurt Russell Got Involved with Guardians of The Galaxy 2 As Peter Quill’s Father
We wanted to know just how Kurt Russell got involved with the movie Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and how he got to play the role of EGO, Peter Quill’s father. It’s actually funny to know that he’d never seen the first movie and had no idea how big it was. Here’s what he said:
“I was doing this publicity stunt for Tarantino’s movie, The Hateful Eight, and one day all of a sudden, [my phone calls] started to go off, which is very rare for me. I don’t have a lot of telephone action. I don’t do media stuff on it so, [the calls were] literally like, this is exciting, are you gonna do this? Then the people in the interview started to ask me, are you gonna do Guardians of the Galaxy? Are you gonna play Peter Quill’s father? I literally had no idea what they were talking about ‘cause I hadn’t seen the movie. And I just said, no. I was like, wow, whatever this is they’re excited about it.”
So he finally talks to his team and says that once he saw the movie, he loved it and was totally into it the more he watched!
“The next day kinda got the official word and I said well guys, I need to read it and I need to see the movie. When I saw the movie right away I kinda fell in love with it and it just got better and better. But more than anything else I was kinda watching Chris [Pratt] and saying, yeah, I get that energy. I get that, kinda that style. I realized from movies that I had done in the past, I would bring the right baggage here. As I read the screenplay, it was even more so.”
Russell says that he got such a great reaction from everyone about him playing the role of Peter Quill’s father, and he really wanted to make sure it was right. He spoke with Director James Gunn and told him he wanted to “make sure we hit the right notes here. I said, you know, it has to have the right amount of comedy and we started talking about it and I felt very comfortable with James. I thought his hand was really solidly on it. He really knew what he was doing.”
