1. Pick only one resolution to focus on

When choosing a new year’s resolution, focus on just one thing to conquer. There’s no way that you can commit to saving more money, losing weight, eating healthier, quit smoking, paying off debt, become more social, travel more, and go back to school all at once. Remember, the goal is to stick to it throughout the year, it’s far too difficult to try to take up 3-5 life changes!

2. Have a plan of action

Sure, it’s easy to say, “I want to pay off my debts” or “I want to eat healthier.” Who doesn’t? No matter what your new year’s resolution is, you’ve got to have a plan of action. How are you going to find the extra money to pay off the debt? Budget better? What’s going to stop you from driving through fast food restaurants? Meal planning? What would it take for you to be able to travel more? Better research? Going with a group? A monthly money saving plan?

3. Take the time to make time for your resolution

Making time for what you hope to accomplish is one of the most important tips for keeping your new year’s resolutions. If you’re always super busy, you’ll feel as though you can’t fit in that afternoon jog, or put together a weekly meal plan. Create a schedule that you can commit to – this could be a budget, a college degree planning outline, or a weekly exercise plan – lifestyle changes need one! Write your plan down and keep it in plain view so that you see it every single day.

4. Be realistic

There’s no better way to kill a new year’s resolution than having it never be attainable in the first place! You should know good and well what you’re capable of. Starting a million dollar grossing company in the first 6 months of the year is highly unlikely, as is losing an immediate 50 pounds when you’ve just started working out, or saving $2,000 in a month when you make $2,000 per month. Patience, and realism, people!

5. Hold yourself accountable, expect failure and don’t give up!

A very important part of successfully keeping your new year’s resolution is accountability. You’ve got to make sure you’re not regressing back to what you’re trying to get away from. Some people have a trustworthy friend or family member that helps them, and others are able to discipline themselves – the key is that you can’t slip up! It can definitely be hard not to grab a sugary snack at a party, spend more than we’ve budgeted for the month, and even just get out of the house to go to the gym on a cold day. Life is full of set backs, and failure is a part of learning. As long as you go in knowing this, holding yourself accountable for it will help you push right past and keep it going!
