I am a San Diego native, so I am a tad embarrassed to say that I had never been to the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens! When I was in LA with Disney last month, I finally got a chance to go. Celebrating the upcoming release of Disneynature BEARS, Disney took our group to the Los Angeles Zoo to check out an American bear in real life! The movie is a nature documentary that follows a mother grizzly bear and her two babies for an entire year as they navigate the mountains of Alaska. They emerge from winter hibernation and must find food and avoid predators at all costs.
The team at the LA Zoo was amazing, we got a little VIP service and checked out a bunch of different animals throughout the park. It was pretty neat to see these majestic creatures in real life. Here are a few photos of the Los Angeles Zoo and the amazing animals they care for…
These Masai giraffes were standing at attention, I was so lucky to be able to snap a photo! The one in the front is the baby of the bunch, still taller that 6 feet!
Hungry chimpanzees beg for food. Their trainer was tossing snacks, so they all started asking for something to eat!
Some of them were lazy and didn’t really feel like leaving their shady spots up in the rocks.
There was one Sumatran tiger, it’s striped coat was gorgeous!
Two hippos were hanging out in the water, they are such large, slow moving creatures. When one would move, the other would follow, staying right by it’s side. They are pretty cool to watch, but their water really stinks!
We got to meet a California Condor, the Los Angeles Zoo has a great California Condor Recovery Program that helps this endangered species thrive. This one is a girl, she weight 14 pounds and can’t fly. The opening of her wings was a sight to see!
There is a whole mock habitat to explore to see how condors live. Such great work they’re doing!
There were two Indian rhinoceros’ in their exhibit. This might sound weird, but I just love the folds on them and the detail on this rhino’s back end!
Last, but certainly not least, we have the majestic BEARS. They are just… wow. This one was relaxing in the shade with a box to play with. Then it got up…
We had such a wonderful visit to the Los Angeles Zoo, I can’t wait to be able to take my family. Next time you’re in LA, pay them a visit and be sure to not only check out the animals, but ride the carousel! In addition to checking out the bears exhibit at the zoo, make sure you see Disneynature’s BEARS movie. It’s out in theaters April 18, 2014!
Also, we got these cute plush BEARS to take home with us. The Disney Store will contribute $1 to the NATIONAL PARK FOUNDATION for every BEARS plush purchased between now and 5/11/14. You can get fun BEARS limited edition iPad and iPhone cases from Dodocase, who will alos donate 20% to the NATIONAL PARK FOUNDATION. I love all of the support for the parks!
