We have been getting into some fun science experiments lately, my son has a science class at school that is fueling his excitement to hypothesize!
Testing reaction is fun stuff. We saw the explosion that is made when you drop Mentos into a 2-liter of Diet Coke, so we definitely had to try it!
How to make a Diet Coke + Mentos Geyser
– Original Mentos
– A 2-Liter of Diet Coke
– optional: pipe and valve
The easiest way to do this is to drop the Mentos into a full bottle of Diet Coke and RUN! My husband decided that he’d get creative and do it the difficult way by adding pvc pipe and a valve to release all of the Mentos into the soda at once. We tried a few different sodas. The Diet Coke was the winner!
Check out the Mentos and Soda experiment video I put on YouTube, this time, we tried Diet A&W Root Beer…
How does it work?
According to Wikipedia, “The numerous small pores on the candy’s surface catalyze the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas from the soda, resulting in the rapid expulsion of copious quantities of foam. The potassium benzoate, aspartame, and CO2 gas contained in the Diet Coke, in combination with the gelatin and gum arabic ingredients of the Mentos, all contribute to the formation of the foam.”
Fun stuff! Stop by the store and grab some Mentos and Diet Coke, amuse your kids today!

This is an old trick, in fact, I have heard that giving birds mento’s isn’t a good idea. Thank you for sharing, I love science demonstrations.
