A fun magic sand recipe

Summer is in full swing and we have been having a blast! My eldest is in summer camp, while my preschooler has been at her school a few days a week, and home hanging out with me. I have been trying to come up with different activities and boredom busters for her, our latest is this fun and colorful DIY Magic Moon Sand!

Now, this is not actual “sand,” but instead a fun, formable material made with baking soda and starch. We experimented with a few ingredients, and we found that our moon sand turned out best with liquid spray starch. I have been known to use Faultless Premium Starch with our laundry, so we had it on hand at home. It’s clog-free, the non-flaking formula has worked at home when ironing pretty much any clothing I’ve needed to.

Who would have thought that I would be able to make a fun sensory activity for kids with spray starch, too? We put our magic sand recipe to the test, added a little color, and we love how it turned out. Here’s how to make our Magic Moon Sand DIY at home, it’s really simple and your little ones can help you make it!

Moon sand ingredients:

Faultless Premium Starch

How to make magic sand

To start this magic moon sand DIY, grab a large bowl and combine the Faultless starch and baking soda, mix thoroughly. I sprayed the starch into a measuring cup to make sure I used the right amount. Slowly stir in oil, you may want to put in a little less to get a lighter consistency. If you put in too much, the sand will stick to your hands.

Next, separate the mixture evenly into three different bowls, one for each color of food coloring you’re using. Add a few drops to each bowl as desired and stir each with a different spoon until the whole mixture is coated with color. You are now ready to play with your Magic Moon Sand!
